Review of Sheep Code of Practice

September 3, 2026

The current Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Sheep was released in 2013 and an update to the code was initiated in 2023.

An incredible amount of work has been done by the Code Committee led by the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) and the Canadian Sheep Federation to revise the Code over the last three years. A draft Revised Code of Practice is available for public comment until October 9th.

The current code and information about the revision process, the Code Committee and how to comment on the revision is here: https://www.nfacc.ca/codes-of-practice/sheep

The full draft revised version of the Code is available here: https://www.nfacc.ca/pdfs/codes/sheep/Draft%20Sheep%20Code%20-%20August%202026.pdf

NFACC has also produced a document that outlines the changes in this revision of the code here: (fact sheet link)

Thank you to the producers and industry volunteers who have participated on the Code Committee. This has been a huge commitment over the last three years to get the Code to this stage of revision and we appreciate your dedication.
