Convention and AGM Highlights

The Ontario Sheep Convention brought together over 200 plus sheep farmers and industry stakeholders for presentations, panel discussions, the Ontario Lamb Banquet and the Ontario Sheep Farmers’ annual meeting.

Dan Morrical, Extension Specialist, Premier 1 Supplies gave a great presentation on Reducing feed costs while meeting the nutritional needs of the ewe flock under annual and accelerated production systems. A second presentation was made by Dan Marrical on Flock tune-ups providing additional valuable insight to producers in attendance and what more can be done to optimize your flock.

Another presentation was done by Christoph Wand, Livestock Sustainability Specialist of OMAFRA and Anita O’Brien, On-Farm Programs Lead with OSF on production responses to fine-tuning trace mineral nutrition.

Panel discussions are always popular with attendees and this year’s panel was no exception. Panelists Phil Botden, Carrie Woolley and Zac Baker provided insights on Cost, profit and labour savings of their feeding systems.

For the fourth year, the OSF ran a research poster competition. Attendees were able to hear about current sheep research projects during two-minute highlight presentations from each researcher in addition to reviewing the posters that were on display. The winning abstract by Syed Ali Goldansaz on predictive biomarkers of sheep feed efficiency and pregnancy is included in this issue of Ontario Sheep

This year’s breakout sessions were on Nutrition basics, Alternative grazing options, Effective barn layouts and Body condition scoring – The best “chute-side” app for the monitoring feeding program.

The Canadian Sheep Breeders Association annual meeting and the Large Flock Operators meeting was also held on-site.

A special thank you to the exhibitors that participated in this year’s trade show and to the Convention sponsors as this event would not be possible without their support!
