Ontario Sheep Farmers announces appointment of an Independent Board Adviser

September 23, 2019 (Guelph, ON) - Ontario Sheep Farmers (OSF) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Deb Stark as an Independent Board Advisor - a cutting edge initiative to strengthen its governance structure and better position the organization to address sector-wide issues.

Over the past several months, OSF has undertaken a comprehensive project to improve its professional standing, sector leadership and governance structure. 

As part of this exercise, OSF has created an industry-leading position to assist the Board in its deliberations on addressing key sector issues, such as animal health and welfare, and to help the board with expediting fair, just and equitable resolution of issues regarding board and/or member conduct.  OSF is very pleased to have retained Dr. Deb Stark (bio follows) as the first Independent Board Advisor.

This initiative is representative of the OSF Board’s approach of “doing things differently” to achieve key sector innovations. As complex industry issues arise, sheep producers and stakeholder partners can be assured that with the addition of the Independent Board Adviser that OSF leadership has expanded its capacity for competent, measured deliberations.  The Independent Board Adviser will enhance the Board’s existing expertise; add to consumer, producer and stakeholder trust; and strengthen industry and government confidence in the progressive direction of OSF.   

OSF is committed to growing the sheep industry and building on its reputation for producing the highest quality product.  For more than 30 years, OSF has been an advocate and unified voice for Ontario’s 3,000 sheep farmers, representing the sheep, lamb and wool industries.

Bio - Dr. Deb Stark:

Dr. Stark is the former Deputy Minister of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA).  During her lengthy public service career, she held various senior leadership roles within OMAFRA and the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) including serving as Ontario's first chief veterinary officer.

Dr. Stark is currently on several boards including the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute, and the University of Guelph.  She is a member of 100 Women Who Care, Rural Wellington, and the Golden Triangle Angel Network.  She also volunteers at a local long-term care facility and is an active mentor.
