PROJECT # R12-4 - Does Pelleting Lamb Feed Improve Efficiency Cost Effectively? 

Applicant: Paul Luimes, University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus

Timeline: December 2012 - August 2014

Objective: To determine the effects of pelleting feed vs. textured feed on growth rate, efficiency of feed use, carcass characteristics, meat quality and feed cost per pound of gain. A second objective is to determine whether the effects of pelleting are consistent across two diverse rations (with and without DDGS).

PROJECT # R12-2 - A Systematic Literature Review on Risk Factors for Anthelmintic Resistance in Sheep Flocks

Applicant: Andria Jones-Bitton, University of Guelph

Timeline: May 2012 – January 2014

Objective: To thoroughly review and objectively evaluate all scientific literature which has studied risk factors for anthelmintic resistance on sheep farms. Recommend parasite control strategies that allow us to control, and effectively prevent development of anthelmintic resistance.

PROJECT # CAAP 0154 - Predation Prevention Project

Applicant: Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency

Timeline: May 2011 – October 2013

Objective: Increase producer awareness of available predation prevention tools and techniques. Determine the effectiveness of these tools under Ontario conditions and calculate their related cost benefit ratio. Explore additional options not currently available in Ontario and document findings. Also to document spatial distribution of predation in Ontario.

PROJECT CAAP 0524- Investigate the feasibility of various software applications for genetic database, flock management tracking and traceability functions for commercial sheep producers in Ontario 

Applicant: Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency

 Timeline: February 2013 – October 2013

Objective: There are two primary components to the project, evaluation of flock management software programs in regard to genetics, flock management tracking, traceability and compatibility with RFID hardware devices. The second objective is to disseminate information to producers to raise their awareness of available software programs and RFID devices available to them.

PROJECT # R10-3 - Genetic Evaluation and Selection Tools for Profitability Improvement in Canadian Sheep Production

Applicant: Stephen Miller, University of Guelph

Timeline: June 2010 – March 2013

Objective: This project will update the current genetic evaluation indexes to include all of the new traits now available.  The new indexes will be economic indexes. These indexes will be available via the CGIL web portal for use with GenOvis and bioFlock programs.

PROJECT # AMI 042 - OSMA Sheep Benchmarking Project

Applicant: Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency

Timeline: September 2011 – January 2013

Objective: A second grant was approved to continue the data collection for a third year.  OSMA will also be producing an economics workbook for annual lambing (an accelerated lambing workbook was previously produced).

Report:
This project is complete. Five key performance indicators were found which include:

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

 1. A flock large enough to capture efficiencies of scale and selected for ewes that have multiple lambs and the ability to raise them is key to profitability.

 2. Pasture systems and total flock feed use from pasture is important for profitability in Ontario sheep flocks.

 3. Lambing frequency and timing are crucial. Cost control appropriate to system is integral to profitability.

 4. Use of genetic and performance data for replacement selection.

 5. Use of time on higher level management tasks versus hands on farming tasks.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of Coxiella burnetii infection in Ontario sheep flock and goat herds and also the farm workers. A second objective is to examine specific risk factors and outcomes of animal health and productivity.

PROJECT # FIP 1148 - Induction of Cervical Dilation for Transcervical Artificial Insemination (TCAI) in Ewes

Objective: Determining ensuing lambing rates resulting from an AI protocol (Guelph system) using Cervidil to dilate the cervix of sexually mature Rideau-Arcott and Crossbred ewes (Rideau Arcott x Polled Dorset crosses)

PROJECT # FIP 1147 - The Performance, Economics and Carcass Quality of Feeding Corn Silage and Other Low Cost Feedstuffs (including industrial by-products) in Finishing Lamb Diets

Objective: To assess how alternative feed sources such as DDGS (Dried Distillers’ Grains with Solubles) can best be profitably incorporated into lamb finishing diets. Also to evaluate what impact such feeds have on the cost of production and on carcass quality.

PROJECT # FIP 1146 - Effects of Gender, Season of the Year, and Management Regimen on Determining Saleable Meat Yield in Lamb Carcasses Using Ultrasound and Electronic Probe Technologies

Timeline: March 2011 – March 2012

Objective: To determine the accuracy of an electronic probe to determine saleable meat yield in Ontario lamb. Also to examine how the variation in management factors for lamb production impacts saleable meat yield. Develop prediction equations for saleable meat yield when the probe is used on commercial lambs of unknown origin.

PROJECT # OMIF 9166 - Ontario Lamb Promotion

Applicant: Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency

Timeline: December 2010 – March 2012

Objective: Establish and maintain effective communication between OSMA and current and future producers. Project a positive, responsible image of the Ontario sheep industry. Raise awareness with consumers and students regarding Ontario lamb production and products.

Report:

OSMA now has several new brochures as well as a new producer booklet.  Displays were made for events such as the Outdoor Farm Show and Royal Winter Fair. District displays were also sent out to every district (ask your district secretary to borrow a consumer, producer or kids display for an event). Feed mills and sales barns received displays. PROJECT – Overwintering of Gastrointestinal Parasites in Ontario Sheep Production Systems

Objective: Determine factors that affect parasite over-wintering and periparturient egg rise in ewes. Also to determine if strategic timing of anthelmintic treatment reduces periparturient egg rise in ewes.
